NEXT SCANNER - The most advanced member of the Microtest Scanner family - automates network cable certification and troubleshooting. Combining hand-held cable certification with an expert system architecture, NEXT SCANNER can run all necessary test automatically, compare actual results to expected results and display the conclusions in plain English.
One of NEXT SCANNER's most useful and powerful features is the ability to certify cable for all local area network (LAN) topologies. This means if you need to install a network in a building with existing cabling, you can verify the cables' ability to transmit data reliably and (with twisted-pair cable) even find the best pairs for high quality data transmission. In another example, you may need to decide whether your cabling can support 4 or 16 Mbps token ring. NEXT SCANNER will tell you this.
The Autotest function makes cable certification as simple as pressing a button. NEXT SCANNER automatically runs all appropriate tests for that network type then compares the results to a table of expected results for that network. All deviations from expected values are reported. You can then print a cable certification record of the test results.
NEXT SCANNER also includes diagnostic features to find cable faults, determine length, generate link test pulse, and then, depending on network type, run additional tests or begin monitoring network activity.
In addition to the powerful, easy-to-use Autotest function that runs a specified series of tests based on your network type, some of the special features of NEXT SCANNER include:
- Near end crosstalk (NEXT) measurement
- Link test pulse active hub activation and network monitoring
- Attenuation (signal loss) measurements for 10BASE-T and token ring networks
- Ability to test all four pairs in a normal twisted-pair cable
- Ability to find and rank the best pairs for local area network communication in any four-pair cable
- Flash memory for quick field software upgrades and option installation
The fastest growing trend in networking today is the use of unshielded twisted-pair (UTP) cabling instead of coax. Twisted-pair cabling has two wires wrapped (or twisted) around each other; hence the name. These wires are twisted between two and 12 times per foot of length. Most twisted-pair cabling contains either four or 25 pairs of wires.
Several reasons account for the popularity of twisted-pair cabling. Twisted-pair cable is less expensive, easier to install and is already installed in many buildings.
In addition, cabling standards already exist, and others will be established soon. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) has issued a standard for twisted-pair Ethernet cabling, called 10BASE-T, increasing it's popularity on Ethernet networks. ARCNET also has a generally accepted twisted-pair cable standard; the EIA 568-wire standard. IEEE is establishing a new standard for token ring using unshielded twisted-pair cable, under 802.5. NEXT SCANNER can verify compliance with present and future standards as they evolve.
Even though vonenient and less expensive, twisted-pair cabling does have its own set of problems. The unshielded variety is more susceptible to interference than coax, shorter cable runs may be necessary, and, depending on the individual cable, it may not support the higher data rates now coming into use (for example, 16 Mbps token ring).
