Dakota MMX-6 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge Flaw Detector
The Dakota MMX-6 is a handheld, multi-mode ultrasonic thickness gauge used to measure material thickness without cutting or damaging the inspected item. Manufactured by Dakota Ultrasonics, it allows measurements with access to only one side of the material. Its primary role is thickness measurement, with pulse-echo capability that can help identify pits and flaws.
The gauge uses a connected ultrasonic transducer to send sound pulses into the material. It measures the time taken for echoes to return and calculates thickness using the material’s sound velocity. A suitable probe, calibration and coupling gel help technicians obtain readings on compatible metals and other materials.
In pulse-echo mode, the MMX-6 measures thickness and helps detect areas affected by corrosion, pitting or other discontinuities. Technicians can compare readings across a surface to identify localized thinning. This makes it useful for inspecting pipe walls, tanks, plates and components where remaining material thickness needs to be assessed.
Its echo-echo mode measures the underlying material through suitable paint or coatings while excluding coating thickness from the result. This can reduce the need to remove paint before inspection. The user can switch between pulse-echo and echo-echo modes to suit the application and surface condition.
The MMX-6 also includes a scan mode for finding minimum thickness, audible and visual alarms, and an RS232 output for transferring measurements to external equipment. These functions support routine inspections and recording results. The separate MMX-6DL version adds an internal data logger; that storage feature is not included in the standard MMX-6.
