Dakota ZX-2 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge

The Dakota ZX-2 Ultrasonic Thickness Gauge is a handheld instrument used to measure material thickness without cutting or damaging the part being inspected. It requires access to only one side of the material, making it useful for checking pipes, tanks, boilers, and other components whose opposite surfaces are difficult to reach.

The ZX-2 works by sending ultrasonic sound pulses into a material through a dual-element probe. The pulses reflect from the material’s back surface, and the gauge uses their travel time and the selected sound velocity to calculate thickness. This allows technicians to check remaining wall thickness and identify areas where corrosion or pitting has reduced the material.

To simplify setup, the gauge offers eight factory material presets, including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, cast iron, and several plastics. It also provides two programmable custom velocity settings. These settings help users configure the instrument for different materials before taking measurements.

The ZX-2 has a specified thickness range of 0.025 to 36.00 inches (0.63 to 914.4 mm), depending on the material and transducer used. It displays readings in inches or millimeters with a resolution of 0.001 inch or 0.01 mm. Its backlit digital display includes a stability bar graph to help users judge the consistency of a reading.

Built for industrial use, the ZX-2 features an aluminum housing, gasket-sealed end caps, and a membrane keypad resistant to water and petroleum products. It weighs approximately 11 ounces with batteries and typically runs for 45 hours on two AA alkaline batteries. Its compact size and straightforward controls make it practical for routine maintenance, corrosion monitoring, and thickness inspections in the field.
