Exfo MAX-730D-SM1 OTDR 1310/1550
The EXFO MAX-730D 1310/1550 PON/Metro SM1 OTDR with iOLM is a portable instrument used to test and troubleshoot single-mode fiber optic networks. OTDR stands for Optical Time Domain Reflectometer. It sends light pulses through a fiber and analyzes the returning light to measure distance, identify connections, and locate faults such as breaks or excessive signal loss.
The SM1 configuration operates at 1310 and 1550 nanometers, two wavelengths commonly used for single-mode fiber testing. Comparing results at both wavelengths helps technicians assess link performance and identify bending-related loss. The instrument measures the location and optical characteristics of events along the cable, supporting installation checks, maintenance, and repair work.
Its PON/Metro designation describes the networks it is designed to test. Passive optical networks use unpowered splitters to distribute fiber connections to multiple customers, while metro networks connect locations across a city or regional area. The MAX-730D is optimized for testing through optical splitters, helping technicians characterize fiber routes in access networks and fiber-to-the-home installations.
The included iOLM, or intelligent Optical Link Mapper, simplifies interpreting test results. It automatically adjusts testing parameters, performs multiple acquisitions, and combines the results into an easy-to-read graphical link map. Connections, splices, splitters, and other events appear as individual elements, with diagnostic information that helps technicians identify problem areas without manually interpreting multiple OTDR traces.
For field use, the MAX-730D combines a seven-inch outdoor-enhanced touchscreen with a compact housing and battery operation rated for up to 12 hours under specified conditions. Its field-replaceable Swap-Out connector helps reduce downtime from worn optical connections. Saved results support documentation and later review, making the instrument useful for technicians who need to verify new fiber installations and investigate existing network problems.
