The Fluke SMFT-1000 Multifunction PV Tester and Performance Analyzer is a field instrument for testing photovoltaic (PV) systems. Solar installers and maintenance technicians use it to check whether a system is electrically safe and whether its panels and strings are producing the power expected. It is designed for PV systems operating at up to 1,000 V DC.

For installation and routine safety checks, the SMFT-1000 measures protective conductor resistance, open-circuit voltage, short-circuit current, and insulation resistance. It also checks polarity, helping technicians identify wiring problems before a system is put into service. These tests support the Category 1 inspection requirements of IEC 62446-1.

The tester also traces a panel or string’s I-V curve, which shows how its current changes as voltage changes. Technicians can compare the measured curve with the manufacturer’s expected curve on the instrument’s screen. This helps reveal underperforming modules or strings during commissioning and troubleshooting.

For performance analysis, the SMFT-1000 can use irradiance and temperature readings from a compatible wireless meter. Those conditions matter because sunlight and temperature affect a panel’s output. The tester also supports recording inspection observations, so measurements and notes can be kept together for later review.

After testing, results can be imported into Fluke TruTest software to organize measurements, analyze I-V curves, compare results from different visits, and prepare reports. This makes the SMFT-1000 useful across a solar system’s life cycle, from initial installation and commissioning to periodic inspection and fault finding.
