Radiodetection RD1100 Utility GPR
The Radiodetection RD1100 is a cart-mounted ground penetrating radar (GPR) system built to locate buried utilities. Operators push it across the ground to investigate what lies below the surface before excavation, construction, or maintenance work. It can detect responses from both conductive and non-conductive objects, including metal, plastic, and ceramic pipes and ducts.
As the cart moves, its wide-band radar antenna sends signals into the ground and records reflections from changes beneath the surface. The results appear as a cross-sectional Line View on the touch screen. An operator can examine these responses, follow a suspected utility’s path, and estimate its depth after calibrating for the ground conditions.
The RD1100 is useful when a conventional electromagnetic locator cannot readily trace a utility, particularly a plastic or ceramic pipe without a tracer wire. Its radar view can also reveal other buried features that need further investigation. Detection depth depends heavily on the soil and target; Radiodetection states a maximum of up to 8 m (27 ft) under suitable conditions.
For field documentation, operators can mark features with arrows on the screen and save screenshots to the unit’s internal memory. Built-in GPS adds location information, while Wi-Fi and USB provide ways to share or transfer the captured images and project information. These tools help crews record what they found and communicate it to colleagues or clients.
The RD1100 combines its radar sensor, touch-screen display, and lightweight cart in a portable system intended for utility locating work. It is designed to be assembled and dismantled quickly for transport between sites. Radiodetection now lists the RD1100 as a discontinued product, but it remains a tool for surveying and marking suspected buried utilities when properly maintained and operated.
