Sewerin Variotec 460 Tracergas Set

The Sewerin VARIOTEC 460 Tracergas Set is a portable leak detection system designed to help technicians find leaks in water pipes and other piping systems. It measures hydrogen from a tracer gas introduced into the pipe being tested. By detecting gas that escapes through damaged sections, the instrument helps identify the location of leaks, including small defects that can be difficult to find using conventional methods.

The system commonly works with a tracer gas mixture containing 95% nitrogen and 5% hydrogen. During testing, the prepared pipe is filled with this mixture, and hydrogen escapes through any leaks. Technicians use a sampling probe connected to the detector to search for the escaping gas at the surface or in inspection holes. For water pipe testing, Sewerin specifies that the pipe must not contain water during inspection.

The Variotec 460 is particularly useful when a leak produces too little sound for acoustic detection. This can happen with hairline cracks, very small leaks, or installations where suitable acoustic measuring points are unavailable. Tracer gas detection provides another way to narrow down the affected area and locate the leak, helping technicians focus repair work and reduce unnecessary excavation.

Its sensitive hydrogen measurement system can display low concentrations with a resolution of 0.1 ppm in the lowest measuring range. A separate thermal conductivity sensor supports measurements at higher hydrogen concentrations. The instrument presents readings on a digital display, while audible and visual signals help the operator recognize changes during a search. These functions support both preliminary surveying and more detailed leak localization.

Designed for field use, the VARIOTEC 460 has an IP54-rated housing, a large display, and straightforward menu controls. Sewerin specifies at least eight hours of operating time, and recorded measurements can be transferred through USB for documentation. It serves water utilities, plumbing contractors, and maintenance teams that need a practical method for locating hidden pipe leaks, the probes and accessories supplied with a particular set depend on its configuration.

Features:

  • Hydrogen tracer gas detection for locating leaks in water pipes and other piping systems.
  • Works with 95% nitrogen / 5% hydrogen tracer gas.
  • High sensitivity, with 0.1 ppm resolution in its lowest hydrogen measuring range.
  • Thermal conductivity sensor for measuring hydrogen concentrations up to 100% by volume.
  • Multiple application modes: above-ground inspection, bar-hole testing, indoor inspection, and gas concentration measurement.
  • Low interference from moisture and methane.
  • Large digital display with numerical readings and a concentration bar graph.
  • Audible and visual signals to assist leak detection.
  • Simple controls using function keys and a jog dial.
  • Measurement storage and USB transfer for documenting results.
  • IP54-rated housing for protection against dust and splashing water.
  • At least eight hours of operating time.
