SPX Radiodetection RD7100PL Cable & Pipe Locator

The SPX Radiodetection RD7100PL is a handheld locator used to find and trace buried utility cables and conductive pipes. The PL model is designed especially for work around power networks, where signals from nearby electrical equipment and multiple cables can make a line difficult to identify.

The locator detects electromagnetic signals on a buried line. It can use signals already present on some utilities, or work with a compatible transmitter that applies a signal to a particular cable or pipe. The operator follows the signal at the surface to mark the utility’s route before excavation or maintenance work.

As the line is traced, the RD7100PL displays signal strength, line direction, estimated depth, and signal current. Its Power Filters help distinguish power cables in areas with strong or overlapping electrical signals. A shallow-utility warning alerts the operator when a detected line is close to the surface.

The RD7100PL can also be used with compatible accessories for tasks such as locating a sonde in a pipe or pinpointing cable insulation faults. Utility crews use it to plan digging, investigate buried assets, and confirm that they are following the intended line. Its readings support careful field locating and should be used alongside established safe-digging practices.
