The Vivax-Metrotech vLoc3-ML Locator Wand and Loc-5STx Transmitter form a system for finding buried utilities before excavation or maintenance work. The handheld vLoc3-ML receiver helps an operator trace underground cables and conductive pipes, while the transmitter supplies a signal that makes a selected utility easier to follow.

The Loc-5STx is a portable 5-watt transmitter. It can apply a locating signal through a direct connection to a utility, an optional signal clamp, or induction from above ground. The operator then follows that signal with the vLoc3-ML to identify the utility’s route and estimate its depth.

The vLoc3-ML also detects buried electronic marker system (EMS) markers. These markers are often installed to identify features such as valves, connections, or changes in a utility’s route. Marker detection is a separate function of the locator and does not require the Loc-5STx to energize the marker.

The receiver offers several views and guidance tools to help an operator pinpoint a line and recognize potentially distorted signals. Its line and marker locating modes let crews investigate both the path of a utility and marked points along it using one handheld instrument.

Together, the locator and transmitter are useful for utility surveys, construction planning, repair work, and marking services before digging. Results depend on the utility material, access to the line, surrounding interference, and site conditions; nonconductive pipes generally need a tracer wire, sonde, or electronic marker to be located.
