The LANcat 1800 is a portable high quality LAN cable test instrument that has the functions needed for cable certification and problem location. When installing, expanding or troubleshooting a network, cable installers and LAN managers need a cable test device that is easy to use, cost effective, and insures proper LAN installation and operation--they need the LANcat 1800.
The LANcat 1800 tests and reports cabling conditions including: Near-end crosstalk (NEXT) and attenuation, Noise (if it poses a problem for network operation), and the length of the cable (noting 3 cable faults). Up to 500 of these tests can be stored for future printing and alphanumerically coded for easy identification.

Functions
- Autotest: Certifies the selected cable by performing the following tests:
- Background noise test.
- Wire Map: Checks that Twisted Pairs are connected correctly.
- Measures near-end crosstalk.
- Measures length of the cable.
- Characteristic impedance.
- Terminator Resistance.
- Reports up to 3 impedance anomalies.
- Impulse Noise: Counts idle channel impulse noise above the user selectable threshold. Displays average counts per second and peak counts per second with the time of occurence.
- Ethernet Traffic: Continuously displays percent utilization (time chennel is active/total time), one second peak utilization, percent collisions, jabber detection, provides audio feedback from network traffic, and shows percent utilization on an active bar graph.
- Test Storage: Stores up to 500 individual cable test results and traffic monitoring report for external printing. Results can be coded with a four digit alpha-numeric identifier for easy location.
- Standard Cable: 10Base-T Category 3-5, Token Ring Category 3-5, Token Ring STD, 10Base-2, 10Base-5, RG58, RG58-foam, RG59, RG59-foam, RG62.
- Custom Cable: Allows definition of connector types and NVP for up to 2 possible user defined cables.
- Special Setup: Allows selection of length (feet or meters), noise (minumum thresholds), TDR reflections.
- Self Test: Tests the LANcat 1800 for correct operation calibration.
- Calibrate Cable: Computes the Nominal Velocity of Propagation (as a percent of speed of light) for user-defined selected cable length.
- Length: Performs cable length comuptations as indicated in the autotest mode above.
- Wire Map: Tests UTP Cable for proper connection and termination, polarity, crossed and split pairs.
- Oscilloscope Mode: Places unit in repetitive mode to enable use of Oscilloscope for TDR response scaling.

- Non-Volitile Memory: Lithium battery backed CMOS memory for last setup, 2 user defined cable types, test results from 500 cable tests, and one network utilization report.
- Printer Interface: RS232; DB9 female connector, DCE configured; user selectable 1200 to 19200 bps, 8 bit, no parity, 2 stop bits, TD, RD, CTS, DTR signals supported; non-isolated interface.
- Input Protection: Withstands normal telephony loop, ringing and transcent voltages.
- Display: 4 line LCD with 16 characters/line.
- Power: Operates on two 9V alkaline batteries. Low battery indication on LCD. Typical battery life is 10 hours (2-3 with extended heavy use). Available with 115V or 230V AC adapter.
- Battery Save: Automatic power-down and results save if 5 minutes of inactivity occurs. This feature is disabled for long-term traffic monitoring and noise testing.
